Quick answer
On Android, Android TV, Windows and Mac, the Apollo TV app offers updates inside the app when you open it, so accept and install them. On iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, update your player in the App Store. If an update won't install, free up storage or reinstall the latest version from our setup guides. Fire TV has its own update guide.
Keeping Apollo Group TV up to date matters more than it might seem. New versions fix bugs, improve playback and keep the app working smoothly with the service. An app that's several versions behind is one of the most common causes of problems that look like something bigger.
How you update depends on the device. On most of them it happens inside the app, and you just say yes when asked. On iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, you watch through a player app from the App Store, which updates like any other app.
This guide covers every device except Fire TV, which has its own detailed guide: see how to update Apollo TV on a Firestick. Everything else is below, along with how to check your version and what to do when an update won't install.
How Apollo Group TV updates work
There are two different setups, depending on your device.
Devices that run the Apollo TV app
On Android phones and tablets, Android TV and Google TV devices, Windows and Mac, you install the Apollo TV app itself. After the first installation, updates arrive inside the app. When a new version is available, the app offers it when you open it, and you approve the installation.
These apps aren't installed from Google Play, the Microsoft Store or the Mac App Store, so those stores won't show Apollo TV updates. That's expected.
iPhone, iPad and Apple TV
On Apple devices, you watch using a compatible IPTV player from the App Store, signed in with your Xtream login details. The player is updated through the App Store, like any other app, and its updates come from the player's developer.
How to check which version you have
Knowing your version tells you whether an update worked and is useful information for support.
| Device | Where to find the version |
|---|---|
| Android phone or tablet | Settings > Apps > Apollo Group TV, then scroll to the version number (often under App details or Advanced) |
| Android TV / Google TV | Settings > Apps > Apollo Group TV |
| Windows | Inside the app's settings or about screen, or in Settings > Apps > Installed apps |
| Mac | Open the app, then the app menu > About Apollo Group TV, or select the app in Finder and choose Get Info |
| iPhone, iPad, Apple TV | The player's version is shown on its App Store page, or in the player's settings |
Our Apollo TV app page shows the latest release information when it's available.
Updating on Android phones and tablets
The normal way: accept the in-app update
- Open the Apollo TV app.
- If an update is available, a prompt offers it. Tap Update.
- Android shows an installation screen. Tap Update or Install.
- Open the app again. You stay signed in.
If Android asks whether to allow the app to install updates, allow it. That permission applies only to this app.
If the update prompt doesn't appear
No prompt usually means you're on the latest version. If you need to update anyway (for example, support has asked you to), download the latest file from our Android phone and tablet guide and install it over the existing app. Android treats this as an upgrade, so your sign-in and settings are kept.
If Android blocks the installation
Android may warn you about installing apps from outside Google Play, or Play Protect may show a message. Our guide to fixing Apollo TV installation problems on Android covers every common warning and error, including "App not installed" and parse errors.
Updating on Android TV and Google TV
On Android TV and Google TV devices, the Apollo TV app updates the same way as on phones: open the app and accept the update when offered.
If you need to reinstall or install a newer version manually, use the Downloader app with the official code, as described in the Fire TV and Android TV guide. The installation upgrades the existing app in place. Our article on the Apollo TV Downloader code explains Downloader's permissions and errors.
Keep the system up to date too
Android TV devices receive system updates from their manufacturer. Check for them under Settings > System > About > System update (menu names vary by brand). An out-of-date system can cause problems that look like app issues.
Updating on Windows
Accept the in-app update
The Windows app installs updates itself. When a new version is ready, accept the update when the app offers it, and let it restart.
If you need to reinstall
- Download the latest installer from our Windows guide.
- Run it. Windows SmartScreen may show a warning because the installer isn't code-signed; choose More info, then Run anyway, only for the file you downloaded from our site.
- Follow the setup wizard. Installing over the existing version keeps your settings in most cases.
Windows tips
- If the app won't start after an update, restart the computer once.
- Security software sometimes quarantines updated files. If the app disappears after an update, check your antivirus history and restore it if needed.
Updating on Mac
Accept the in-app update
Like the Windows version, the Mac app downloads and installs updates itself. Accept the update when it's offered.
If you need to reinstall
- Download the latest installer from our Mac guide. The app needs macOS 12 or later.
- Open the DMG and drag Apollo Group TV into Applications, choosing Replace when asked.
- If macOS won't open the app after replacing it, repeat the one-time Terminal step from the Mac guide. It's needed because the app isn't signed with an Apple Developer ID.
Mac tips
- Quit the app fully (Cmd+Q) before replacing it.
- If the app opens but behaves oddly after an update, restart the Mac.
Updating on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV
On Apple devices you're using a player app, so updating means updating that app through the App Store.
Turn on automatic updates
- iPhone and iPad: Settings > App Store, then turn on App Updates.
- Apple TV: Settings > Apps, then turn on Automatically Update Apps.
Update manually
- iPhone and iPad: open the App Store, tap your profile picture, and pull down to refresh the list of updates. Tap Update next to the player.
- Apple TV: open the App Store, find the player and select Update if it's available.
Your login details don't change with an update
Player updates don't change your Apollo Group TV login. If the player asks you to sign in again after an update, use the Xtream server, username and password from My Account. Our guide to Xtream codes login details explains each field. The iPhone and iPad guide and Apple TV guide show the full setup.
Why updates are worth installing
It's tempting to ignore an update prompt when everything seems to work. A few reasons not to:
- Compatibility. Services and devices change over time. An app that falls far behind can stop connecting properly, and the fix is almost always to update.
- Playback improvements. Updates often include changes to how streams start and recover from brief connection drops, which matters most for live TV.
- Security. Updates fix weaknesses in the app and the libraries it uses. Our app's release notes mention, for example, how login details are stored on the device.
- Support can help faster. When something goes wrong, the first question support asks is which version you're on. Being on the latest version rules out a whole category of problems.
Never install old or modified versions from other sites
Sometimes people look for an older version because they preferred how it looked, or download "updates" from video descriptions and forums. Please don't. Files from other sources can be modified, out of date or simply broken, and they often cause the "App not installed" conflicts described below. The only places to get the Apollo TV app are the links and codes in our setup guides, and the in-app update itself.
If a recent update causes a problem for you, tell us through support rather than rolling back. That way it can be fixed for everyone.
When an update fails
Work through these, most likely first.
Not enough storage
Updates need free space to download and unpack. Delete apps and files you don't need, then try again. On TV devices, clearing the cache of large apps also helps.
A conflicting older version
If you once installed the app from somewhere other than our website, a newer official version may refuse to install over it. Uninstall the old app, then install the official one. You'll need to sign in again, so have My Account open.
Interrupted download
Weak Wi-Fi can leave a broken download. Move closer to the router or use a cable, then try again.
The app crashes after updating
Clear the app's cache (Android: Settings > Apps > Apollo Group TV > Storage > Clear cache). If that doesn't help, clear its data or reinstall, then sign in again.
Still stuck?
Open a ticket from your dashboard through support with your device, its system version and the app version, plus the exact error message.
Example: one household, four devices
Here's what updating looks like in a household with several devices:
- Android phone: opening the app shows an update prompt. One tap, a few seconds, done.
- Windows laptop: the app offers the update at launch and restarts itself.
- iPad: the App Store has updated the player overnight because automatic updates are on.
- Bedroom Fire TV: handled separately using the Fire TV guide.
The only device that needs attention is the one where nobody has opened the app for weeks. Opening each app now and then is enough to keep everything current.
Frequently asked questions
Does Apollo TV update automatically?
On Android, Windows and Mac, the app checks for updates itself and offers them when you open it; you approve the installation. On Apple devices, the player updates through the App Store, automatically if you turn that on.
How do I know if I have the latest version?
If the app doesn't offer an update when you open it, you're usually on the latest version. You can check the version number in your device's app settings.
Why won't my Apollo TV app update?
The usual causes are low storage, a weak connection during the download, or an older copy installed from a different source. The fixes are in the section above.
Will updating log me out?
Normally not. Updating in place keeps your sign-in. You only sign in again if you uninstall first or clear the app's data.
Why doesn't Google Play show an Apollo TV update?
The Apollo TV app isn't installed from Google Play, so Google Play can't update it. Updates come from inside the app, or from installing the latest version from our setup guides.
What should I do if the app asks me to update every time I open it?
That usually means the update didn't finish installing. Make sure you approve the installation screen after the download, free up some storage, and try once more. If it keeps happening, reinstall the latest version from our setup guide.
How do I update Apollo TV on a Firestick?
Fire TV has its own guide, including how to update when the in-app prompt doesn't appear: see our article on updating Apollo TV on a Firestick.
Can I go back to an older version of Apollo TV?
We don't recommend it. Older versions can stop working properly with the service, and files from other websites may be modified. If an update causes a problem, tell our support team so it can be fixed.
Do I need to update the player on my iPhone?
Keeping it updated is a good idea, because player updates fix bugs and add support for newer iOS versions. Turn on automatic App Store updates and it happens on its own.
Conclusion
Updating Apollo Group TV is mostly a matter of saying yes. On Android, Windows and Mac, the app offers updates itself; when it doesn't, installing the latest version from our setup guides upgrades it in place. On iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, your player updates through the App Store. If an update fails, storage, an older conflicting copy or a weak connection is almost always the reason.
